How We Found the Right Cabin (And Walked Away From the First One)

After years of moving from city to city—and continent to continent—my wife and I knew we needed a place to rest. A place where our daughter could grow roots and where we could stretch our souls. That’s how the idea of The Station was born.

Our First Cabin Contract

The first cabin we found checked every box… except the one that mattered most: how it felt. Despite its views and low price, the layout felt cramped, and we couldn’t imagine our family growing into it. After negotiating for weeks and even signing a contract, we backed out.

How We Filtered Listings

  • We used Zillow’s map view to narrow by region.
  • Filtered for “fixer uppers” and “under $300,000.”
  • Looked for land, privacy, and potential—not perfection.

How We Knew This Was the One

We toured the second cabin—an A-frame nestled into a hillside in West Virginia—and knew immediately. The light, the sound of the trees, and the feeling of potential were unmistakable. We signed the contract the next morning.

This was our Station. A place to pause, not just pass through.
